N:It's not what it sounds like! A 'maggot-man' was a serving-man-of-all-trades, roughly equivalent to a handy-man-cum-whatever. Used in John Carr’s catch announcing publication of Playford’s English Dancing Master in 1651, O’Carolan was presumably conversant with the term as that catch remained popular for some sixty years or so.
