Born in 1926 in the village of Larraga in Ballinakill parish, in the heart of a locality filled with great flute and fiddle players, Mike learned much of his music from his father, Tom "Barrel" Rafferty, a flute player and piper. In 1949 Mike emigrated to the United States, where he has lived ever since. He has performed at concerts and festivals throughout the country over the past 25 years and has taught Irish flute at the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina, and the Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia. Mike has also released three widely praised CDs over the years - "The Dangerous Reel", "The Old Fireside Music", and "The Road From Ballinakill". *** Mary Rafferty was actively encouraged to play traditional Irish music by her father Mike, and has attained a remarkable level of virtuosity on flute, tin whistle and button-accordion. In addition to the recordings with her father, she released a solo album in 2002, "Hand Me Downs". Her recording features many tunes that she learned from Mike and he joins her on a few tracks. Mary is well known for her association with the popular Irish super-group Cherish The Ladies, with whom she spent seven years touring and recording. *** Dónal Clancy will be joining Mike & Mary on guitar and bouzouki. Dónal grew up in the Ring Gaeltacht of county Waterford, a place steeped in traditional music. Being born into a musical family (his father Liam, being one of the Clancy Brothers) he was exposed to Irish music from an early age. He has appeared on many recordings and currently lives in New York and is actively touring with the group "Danu". UPCOMING CONCERTS |
