John Bennet
(c.1570-after 1614)



English composer. Probably from northwestern England. His works 
consist of a book of madrigals for four voices (London, 1599), one 
madrigal in The Triumphes of Oriana (1601), two consort songs, 
four Psalm settings and a prayer in Barley's psalter of ca. 1599, 
a verse anthem, and six secular vocal pieces in Ravenscroft's A 
Briefe Discourse( 1614). The madrigals include both solemn and 
lighter works, Many are clearly modeled on the style cultivated by 
Thomas Morley, but influences from Weelkes, Wilbye, and 
Dowland are also evident. The consort songs and the anthem 
show an awareness of earlier English styles.
