To answer few frequently asked question:
"Will this be available on a CD soon?" The O'Carolan's tunes are now included on the O'Neill's CD along with
the tunes from Allan's Irish Fiddler and a selection of Madrigals.
(Slight philosophical diversion: One music teacher wrote and ordered six of them for his students and for backups... he simply
loans a CD to a student, assigns a particular tune number and the kid goes home with the tune to practice for a week with
how it sounds, how it looks and his written notes for a guide. He was apologetic, though, as he's sure that the CD is now
copied onto several hard drives that didn't order it, to which I replied that enough people will donate to the site to cover a few
unprincipled kids. )
To all who have (and will) order a CD by donation to the site, my sincere thanks!
"How come my favourite tune by O'Carolan isn't on the site?"
Simply put, the collection is composed of those tunes actually composed by O'Carolan, according to Donal O'Sullivan, who
applied stringent criteria to determine those tunes actually written by O'Carolan and eliminate those merely attributed to him
with no provenance. As Mr. O'Sullivan is now hoisting a few with O'Carolan, I fear that remonstrances for his non-inclusion
of material will fall on deaf ears. You might try the O'Neill's Collection, where quite a few "suspicious" tunes were included
by the Chief and his Sergeant.
"What possessed you to do this and the O'Neill's, Catches and Madrigals pages?"
I'm bloody insane, I am. Especially since this is the sixth iteration of the collection and every bleedin' link must be re-entered
by hand, an amazingly stultifying process. The fact that I can still speak without drooling is somewhat of a minor miracle.
No, really, it's been a bugaboo of mine for years that you could not find this music online without paying for it (it's all Public
Domain, but some people will do anything for a buck) and I finally had the time and the opportunity to do summat about it.
Now you can play the tunes, copy the sheet or ignore the whole thing as you prefer. Ain't the net grand? Of course, if you
find this site useful, and you've read down to here AND you've a few bob in your skyrocket as you don;t need, you can
donate to the site and I'll happily send a CD of all this to you so you can have it on your computer. Since I'm in America and
the dollar is a-sinking all the time, it's getting cheaper and cheaper to get your own copy.

Some notes and explanations:
The lists below are linked to the tunes in FOUR (04) formats:
NWC (Noteworthy Composer), ABC Notation Software, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digitial Interface) and a GIF picture of the
sheet music.
The INSTRUCTION PAGE for viewing all this is HERE. Don't let it scare you off! The MIDI files are playable as soon as you
d/l them to your computer as (once you install the player programme) are the NWC files. The GIF pictures should open up as
soon as clicked in your browser's picture software. NOTE: MAC users should check THIS out!
CHRIS GILB from the Great Frozen New England of the USA came up with this suggestion and assiduously transcribed all the
songs from a flea-market-find book into Noteworthy Composer Jan - Mar of 2004 (well, what else was he gonna do, then?
Bloody snowdrifts over yer head...wolves howlin' in the town commons... why anyone would want to live up in.... ah, wurra, back
to the subject!) and emailed them to me ten at a time, along with their MIDI files (pretty harp sounds!). I immediately masticated
all his careful scribery and converted them to the ABC files and GIF sheet music as well as converting the keys from
Eb/Bb/R#demented to "user friendly" G, A, D, etc., and did all the general secretarial wirty dirk bent toward getting this online.
We pat each other and ourselves on the back in anticipation of your excoriations. Also reprehensi...responsible are BRIAN CREER
of ABC2NWC fame and PAUL SCHWARTZ , compiler and perpetrator of the Concertina Net's ABC CONVERTER
programme... without their perspicacious programming prowess you wouldn't be reading this right now or wondering who this
chatty berk is.
ORIGIN: Chris came across this in a book he got at a fleamarket some years back, no cover or publisher info on it, for 10p. It's
pretty clear from the layout of the tunes that it was a copy of DONAL O'SULLIVAN'S work (pub. in 1958 and since reprinted
by OSSIAN, CELTIC MUSIC and (I've no doubt) several others as well. Mel Bay's probably waiting in the wings to have a go at
it!). The OSSIAN pub is ruled out as it does not have the "extra" tune (CAP'T O'NEILL) which Ossian included (presumably) to
make it a copyright-able publication (Thanks to Seamus O'Malley of Cork who sent me that one!) : no matter, for none of the
copies (to my knowledge) contained Mr. O'Sullivan's extensive notes, words to the various tunes or any of the other additional
materials included in his two-volume original publication. A shame, I'd have loved to have been able to put the words up here as
well, but such is life. At any rate, neither O'Sullivan nor the original publisher copyrighted the material, so I feel quite justified in
putting the tunes up here. (I am since informed that there are several booksellers on the web where the originals are still available!)
I stress that errors, omissions, contusions and catarrh are my fault and I'll run like hell if even one of you so much as looks like
complaining! (KUDOS) (BRICKBATS) (CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICIZMS) (ERROR REPORTS)
Here's a BIO page on Turlough O'Carolan. (It's probably the one you just came from!)
NOTE: WHILE ALL TUNES HAVE BEEN TRANSPOSED FROM Eb, Bb, F and other such "orchestral" keys into "USER
FRIENDLY" (for the untrained musician) keys like A, D and G, it is eminently possible in the NWC programme to move these
back to their original keys or to further transpose them to things like Ab. (But why would you want to?) (Unless you're a
harper?)
If you have any am- or emendments to the following, please contact me at "CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICIZMS" above.
